Foreign banks expect more BSP interest rate hikes after surprise move
After the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas unexpectedly raised its policy rate by 50 basis points to 5.5% on October 22, foreign bank analysts are bracing for further tightening. Nomura projects an additional 75 bps in hikes through early 2027, including another jumbo 50-bps move in December and a 25-bps hike in February, potentially lifting the rate to 6.25%. Citi similarly flagged that a weakening peso could trigger a 50-bps December hike to the same 6.25% level. Analysts warn this extended high-rate environment will keep mortgage costs elevated well into 2027, adding pressure to residential property demand. According to Manila Bulletin, the outlook suggests little relief for homebuyers in the near term.
